It made me feel like I could trust myself with credit cards again (I shredded them during DR and even closed my oldest credit card account, fml) because I could literally see the cash allocated for any cc spending I made. The envelopes made sense to me already and I really liked the credit card feature. I found YNAB shortly after that by searching for an online envelope system. I did find the manual tracking labor intensive (although I liked the colored pens and highlighters, felt fun) and I had to carry a bunch of budgeting crap (notebook, pens, highlighters, cash envelopes) with me if I was out of town to keep up on it. I paid off all the rest of my debt in 2020 using her method. I felt like I'd finally found a way to manage my expenses on a per-paycheck basis so I wasn't running low and could plan a little better. I left ED and started following TheBudgetMom who does paper budget-by-paycheck budgeting and expense tracking and uses literal cash envelopes. well, variable depending on when I was paid and what bills were due when. For example, if I budgeted $500 a month for groceries, I wasn't sure if I actually had $500 at the beginning of the month or if it was more like $125/week, or $100 one week and $150 the next week. I ran into issues like u/theyear1989 did where I had budgeted for the whole month but was unclear how much I could spend each day/week. I was able to pay down a lot of debt using the Baby Steps and ED. I used ED for a while and it was good for a starting budget. The cost can be steep if you are starting very broke The language used by YNAB is kind and supportive One app handles most budgeting and bank balancing needs No free version (not necessarily a bad thing) Helpful when I was super broke and could not pay for a budgeting app I used 3 apps to do everything YNAB doesĭave Ramsey does not use kind language and makes me feel small and worthless I started searching and found YNAB.įorcasting budget unless you put income into next month manually (if you really need to do this to save money, it can be done)ĭoes not roll balances forward unless you set it upĭifficult to balance. Every Dollar does not play nice with credit cards. This worked okay until I wanted to introduce a credit card. I used Every Dollar like an envelope budget by putting this month's income into next month and then only budgeting money I actually had.
